Naming Rules

Naming Rules allow you to automatically name a computer based on a convention you assemble. Naming rules should be added to top level configuration profiles. They will not be used if assigned to a nested profile as a nested profile will only bring in items/scripts to be run.

Naming Rules Usage

  1. Click on New to create rule

  2. You will enter a Rule Name and Rule Description. Note there are 4 items types in the Select Name Part dropdown list - Serial, Count, Chassis and Text.

  3. You may always choose Chassis or Text to use in rule but may only choose either Serial or Count - not both in the same rule. And character count limited to 15 so anything longer will be truncated - standard Microsoft computer name limitation.

  4. Count - we are only checking against our stored database of ezdeploy deployments performed to determine the next available name. This does not include any manual renames of computers performed outside of an ezdeploy deployment.

You may want to reserve number range to use for manually named computers and start the Count at higher range to avoid potential conflicts.

Example rule creation using Text, Chassis and Serial

a) For Text selection entered ABC- to represent client prefix then click Add+

b) For Chassis selection - set LT- for laptops and DT- for desktops then clicked Add+

c) Select Serial and clicked Add+

d) Final rule is ready with the complete Name Format desired - click Submit to finish rule.

Example rule creation using Text, Chassis and Count

a) For Text selection entered ABC- to represent client prefix then click Add+

b) For Chassis selection - set LT- for laptops and DT- for desktops then clicked Add+

c) Select Count, select Client, select Starting Number then click Add+. Count has option to Enable Fixed Length up to 4 characters. Count is available on Client or Location basis.

When Count is selected it defaults to being Client based - where only the Client selection dropdown is active.

If Count on a Location basis is desired - select the Client first, then click the Location checkbox to enable the Location selection dropdown and select desired Location.

You may want to reserve number range to use for manually named computers and start the Count at higher range to avoid potential conflicts.

Example: Client based Count without Enable Fixed Length applied - count starts at 100.

Example: Client based Count with Enable Fixed Length applied of 4 characters - count starts at 0200

Example: Location based Count without Enable Fixed Length applied - count starts at 200.

Example: Location based Count with Enable Fixed Length applied of 4 characters - count starts at 0200

d) Naming Rule is ready when you have the desired Name Format - click Submit to finish rule.

Count has additional feature to Clear Existing Naming Rule Count if needed. If you edit an existing naming rule and select Count you will see the button. So this would allow you to edit and start at higher range for example.

Once you click on the button you will be prompted to confirm by clicking Clear Count.
